Iran Human Rights: Two young men were hanged in the prison of Hamedan, western part of Iran, reported the state run Iranian news agency ISCA news today November 14.

The men were identified as Habib (21) and Mohammad (age not mentioned) and were convicted of rape and murder of a 9 years old girl identified as Zinat in 2008, according to the report.

Iran Human Rights underlines that the charges mentioned in the report are not confirmed by independent sources.

We are also investigating further about the full identity and age of those executed today.

Iran Human Rights: According to some sources in Iran, the Kurdish political prisoner Shirkooh (Bahman) Moarefi has been transferred to solitary confinement being prepared for execution. According to these sources Mr. Moarefi could be executed in the coming days.

Shirko Moarefi (30) is a Kurdish civil rights activist sentenced to death y the Iranian authorities convicted of "Moharebeh" (war against God).

Mr. Moarefi’s defence lawyer, Ahmad Saeed Sheikhi, told radio Zamaneh (an exile radio-website) that he has not been informed by the authorities that his client is going to be executed, but the ppossibility is there that Mr. Moaredi could be executed soon.

Iranian authorities have often executed prisoners without informing their lawyers.

Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, the spokesperson of Iran Human Rights said: "We are very concerned about Shirkoo Moarefi and 12 other Kurdish prisoners who are at imminent danger of execution." He added:" We have also heard that many prisoners could be executed in near future in Tehran. UN must urgently send a special envoy to Iran to visit the Iranian prisons especially the prisons in Kurdistan and Tehran".

TEHRAN - Amnesty International and the parents of a convicted political activist called on Iran to stop his execution, which could take place on Saturday.

The human rights group said Shirkouh Moarefi, 24, from the Kurdish city of Saghez, had been moved to solitary confinement in the death row section of Saghez prison on Thursday, suggesting he could be executed any day.

Amnesty and website Mowjcamp, which backs reformist politician Mirhossein Mousavi, said Moarefi was sentenced to be hanged for political activities a year ago. Mowjcamp said the execution could take place on Saturday.

“The Iranian authorities must halt the imminent execution of Sherko Moarefi, a Kurdish man convicted of ‘enmity against God’ over his alleged membership of a proscribed Kurdish organisation,” Amnesty said.

Tagheer, the website of another opposition figure Mahdi Karoubi, carried an appeal for a stay of execution from Moarefi’s parents.

“We demand all international forums and human rights groups ... to enter into negotiation with the Islamic Republic in connection to his execution,” a statement said.

Iran hanged a Kurdish activist last week, a day after U.S.-based Human Rights Watch asked for his death sentence to be revoked.

Like neighbouring Iraq and Turkey, Iran has a large Kurdish minority, mainly living in its northwest and west. Iran is a mainly Shi’ite Muslim country, but most Kurds are Sunni Muslims.

Iran rejects Western accusations of discrimination against ethnic and religious minorities in the Islamic Republic.

Amnesty International has listed Iran as the world’s second most prolific executioner in 2008 after China, and says it put to death at least 346 people last year.

Iranian regime has transferred seven students of Shiraz University to Adelabad prison in Shiraz, southern Iran. They were arrested during the attack by the regime’s repressive forces during protests held at the university on November 4.

Iranian regime’s judiciary held a “court session” on Wednesday in Shiraz to determine the status of 48 protesters who were arrested on the same day in the city, but it refused to review the cases of students among them.

In the central city of Esfahan, a student activist was transferred to the city’s Dastgerd prison. He had been detained by State Security Forces during November 4 protests in the city.

In city of Tafresh (central Iran), agents of the Ministry of Intelligence and Security have arrested seven students at Tafresh University. Two of the detained students are missing and there is no information available on them. A number of other students have been summoned by university authorities. They have been pressured to spy on their friends and student activists.

Amnesty International today (12 November) expressed serious concern at reports that the head of Iran's Police Criminal Investigation department has called for greater reliance on the amputation of the hands of thieves to reduce crime.

According to the the Iranian Labour News Agency on 8 November, police chief Asghar Jafari claimed that if such punishments were implemented, crime could be reduced by 90%. He produced no evidence to support this assertion.

Amnesty International UK Director Kate Allen said:

'Amputation is a completely inhumane punishment and basically amounts to torture. Like other cruel practices such as flogging, it's prohibited by international human standards.

'Amnesty International has long campaigned for an end to such punishments. We are also urging the Iranian authorities to end the use of the death penalty and particularly stoning, a method specifically designed to increase the suffering of the condemned person.'

The last amputation in Iran recorded by Amnesty took place in Kermanshah, western Iran in December 2008.

STUFFING its ears to opposition cries of treason, Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party is going ahead with bold moves to end the country’s long-running Kurdish problem. The odd bout of turbulence notwithstanding, peace between Turkey and its rebellious Kurds now seems closer than ever.

This week the ruling party proposed a measure to reduce or commute sentences for thousands of stone-throwing young Kurds charged with acting for the rebel Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). If it is passed, they would no longer be tried in adult courts. That should help blunt the radicalisation of a new generation of jobless Kurds, natural recruits for the PKK.
